Person1912 – 1994

Kim Il Sung

Leader of North Korea (1948–1994): chairman of the Provisional People’s Committee, then premier and president. Purged rivals after the Korean War and built one-man rule

In the 1930s he fought with the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army in Manchuria and led the raid on Bocheonbo in 1937. After liberation, as chairman of the Provisional People's Committee for North Korea, he carried out land reform by confiscation and free distribution, and he took part in the North–South Negotiations of 1948. He became premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948 and launched the Korean War with the invasion of the South in 1950. In the August Faction Incident of 1956 he purged the Yan'an and Soviet factions, and he launched the Chollima Movement. The Socialist Constitution of 1972 made him President, entrenching one-man rule built on the Juche idea. He died in 1994, shortly before a planned inter-Korean summit.
