Napoleon III
Also called: Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte
Louis-Napoléon, nephew of Napoleon I, elected president in 1848, who made himself emperor (1852–1870) by a coup but was captured in the Franco-Prussian War and deposed
A nephew of Napoleon I, he twice tried and failed to seize power, but after the February Revolution of 1848 his name carried him to the presidency. He staged a coup in 1851 and the following year became emperor by plebiscite (the Second Empire). He promoted Haussmann’s rebuilding of Paris, railways and industry, and plunged into the Crimean War and the war for Italian unification. Under his rule France attacked Korea in 1866 (the French campaign against Korea). Captured at Sedan in 1870, he saw his empire collapse and died in England.
