Kim Yun-hu

Monk-turned-commander who killed the Mongol general Sartai at Cheoin in 1232 and held Chungju for 70 days in 1253

In the second Mongol invasion he defended Cheoinseong with the people of Cheoin bugok (today’s Yongin) and shot dead the Mongol general Saritai, forcing the Mongols to withdraw. In the fifth invasion, as defence commissioner of Chungju, he burned the registers of government slaves and promised rank to anyone who fought well, rallying the defenders to hold the fortress. He is cited as an example of how commoners and slaves led the resistance against the Mongols.
