Battle of Cheoinseong

In the second Mongol invasion the monk Kim Yun-hu and the people of Cheoin-bugok defended Cheoinseong and shot dead the Mongol commander Sartai, forcing the Mongols to withdraw.

Cheoin was a bugok, a special district whose people suffered discrimination, yet they held off the main Mongol army from a small earthen fort. Having lost their general, the Mongols soon pulled out. Offered the rank of senior general, Kim Yun-hu declined, saying he had not even carried a bow in the fight. Cheoin-bugok was later raised to a county. The first Tripitaka, kept at Buinsa, was burned during this invasion.
