Siege of Chungju

In the fifth Mongol invasion Kim Yun-hu held Chungju for more than 70 days, burning the registers of government slaves to promise their freedom and rallying the defenders.

As food ran out, Kim Yun-hu declared that all who fought hard would receive office regardless of status, burned the slave registers and shared out captured oxen and horses. The Mongols failed to take the fortress and withdrew. Soon afterwards the iron-working district of Dain-cheolso was raised to a county for its part in defending Chungju.
