Gung Ye

Monk said to be of Silla royal blood who rose under Yanggil, founded Later Goguryeo at Songak in 901 and renamed it Majin and Taebong; styling himself the Maitreya Buddha, he ruled harshly and was overthrown

A monk of Sedalsa, he rose as a follower of Gihwon and then Yanggil. He took Gangwon and parts of Gyeonggi and Hwanghae, and won over the Songak hojok family of Wang Geon. In 904 he renamed the state Majin, setting up the Gwangpyeongseong and other offices and a nine-grade rank system; in 905 he moved the capital to Cheorwon, and in 911 renamed the state Taebong. He was so hostile to Silla that he called it "the doomed capital." Claiming to read minds, he killed ministers and even his queen and sons, until in 918 his officials drove him out; fleeing, he was killed by local people at Pyeonggang.
