Abolition of the Nogeup

King Sinmun abolished the nogeup stipend villages of aristocratic officials and paid them an annual grain stipend instead.

A nogeup let its holder collect the tax of a district and use the labour of its people, and so underpinned aristocratic power; its abolition is seen as the high point of royal power under Sinmun. That same year Sinmun tried, and failed, to move the capital to Dalgubeol (Daegu).

Under aristocratic pressure the nogeup were restored in 757 under King Gyeongdeok.
