Korea paid 500,000 won, allowed Japanese troops to remain in Seoul to guard the legation and sent an apology mission (led by Park Yeong-hyo). A supplementary treaty signed the same day widened the zone in which Japanese merchants could travel from the open ports to 50 li, rising to 100 li after two years.
With both Qing and Japanese troops now in Seoul, rivalry over Korea deepened.
