Siege of Dongnae

The day after Busanjin fell, the Japanese surrounded Dongnae. Its magistrate Song Sang-hyeon died resisting, declaring "It is easy to die fighting, hard to let you pass".

On the 15th of the fourth month Konishi Yukinaga’s first division reached Dongnae and set up a placard: "Fight if you will fight; if not, let us pass." Magistrate Song Sang-hyeon wrote back "It is easy to die fighting, hard to let you pass" and threw it down.

The fortress fell within half a day. Song is said to have met his death seated in court robes, while soldiers and townspeople fought on, hurling roof tiles. The army and navy commanders of Left Gyeongsang nearby withdrew without a fight. In 2005, subway works in Busan uncovered the bones and weapons of those killed in the moat of Dongnae.
