Yi Jong-mu

Early Joseon general who led the 1419 expedition to Tsushima

In 1419, the year after Sejong came to the throne, he attacked Tsushima, a base of Japanese pirates, on the orders of the retired king Taejong, who still held military power. After the expedition Joseon opened three ports at the request of the lord of Tsushima and later allowed limited trade under the Gyehae Treaty.
