Jang Bogo
Former Tang officer who set up the Cheonghae garrison on Wando, cleared the seas of pirates and dominated trade among Silla, Tang and Japan
While serving as an officer in Tang’s Wuning Army, he saw Silla people seized by pirates and sold as slaves, and came home. In 828, with King Heungdeok’s approval, he founded Cheonghaejin with ten thousand men. He sent trade missions to Tang and to Japan, and built the Beophwawon temple at Chishan village in Shandong. In 839 he helped Kim U-jing, a loser in the succession struggle, take the throne as King Sinmu. When King Munseong dropped a plan to marry Jang’s daughter after nobles objected to "an islander’s daughter," Jang rebelled and was assassinated by Yeomjang, sent by the court. Cheonghaejin was abolished in 851.
