King Heungdeok

42nd king of Silla, who let Jang Bogo set up the Cheonghae garrison

In 828 he granted Jang Bogo, newly returned from Tang, ten thousand men to set up the Cheonghaejin garrison on Wando. The same year, when the envoy Kim Dae-ryeom brought tea seeds back from Tang, the king had them planted on Jirisan, and tea growing spread. In 834 he issued an edict against luxury that limited clothing colours, carriages, utensils and even house sizes by bone rank.
