Geochilbu

Silla minister and general under King Jinheung who compiled the history Guksa and took ten districts of the upper Han River from Goguryeo in 551

A fifth-generation descendant of King Naemul, he is said to have become a monk in his youth and, while spying out Goguryeo, to have met the Dharma master Hyeryang. In 545, when King Jinheung accepted Isabu’s advice, he gathered scholars and compiled the Guksa. In 551, as one of eight generals, he attacked Goguryeo and took ten districts of the upper Han River beyond Jungnyeong Pass, bringing Hyeryang back to Silla to head the Buddhist order. Under King Jinji he became sangdaedeung and ran the affairs of state. The Guksa is lost, but it is seen as a work meant to display royal authority once Silla had built its state on law codes and Buddhism.
