Born into the Ise family of Bitchū, he served the shogunate and made his name settling a succession dispute among the Imagawa of Suruga, into whose house his sister Kitagawa-dono had married. He took Izu in 1493 and then Odawara in Sagami, and in 1516 destroyed the Miura to master Sagami. Long thought born in 1432, he is now more often dated to 1456. “Hōjō Sōun” is a later name; in life he was Ise Sōzui. He died at Nirayama Castle in 1519.
