The tournament was held in France from 10 June to 12 July 1998, with the finals enlarged to 32 teams. Croatia, in their first finals, came third, and Davor Šuker was top scorer. South Korea lost 1–3 to Mexico and 0–5 to Guus Hiddink’s Netherlands, sacked their coach Cha Bum-kun mid-tournament, and drew 1–1 with Belgium. In the final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on 12 July, two headers from Zinedine Zidane helped France beat Brazil 3–0 for their first title; a team with many players from immigrant families was hailed as a symbol of a France of many roots.
