The tournament was held in Sweden from 8 to 29 June 1958. The Soviet Union took part for the first time, and England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all qualified. Just Fontaine of France scored 13 goals, still the record for a single tournament. In the final at the Råsunda Stadium in Solna on 29 June Brazil beat Sweden 5–2 for their first title, the seventeen-year-old Pelé scoring twice. It remains the only time a South American team has won the World Cup in Europe.
