Recapture of Hanyang
Having lost Pyongyang and been checked at Byeokjegwan and Haengju, the Japanese left Hanyang under the peace talks. On the 20th of the fourth month Ming and Korean troops entered the capital after a year.
After retaking Pyongyang, Li Rusong marched south but was beaten at Byeokjegwan on the 27th of the first month, fell back to Gaeseong and avoided battle. Gwon Yul won his great victory at Haengju in the second month, while the Japanese in Hanyang suffered hunger and disease. Shen Weijing and Konishi agreed that the Japanese would leave the capital and the Ming would not attack their rear.
The Japanese left on the 18th of the fourth month for the southern coast, and the allies entered on the 20th. Ryu Seong-ryong wrote of a burned city with the bodies of the starved piled in the streets. Seonjo returned only in the tenth month; with every palace burned, he lived in the old house of Prince Wolsan, later Gyeongungung (Deoksugung).
