The Games were held from 30 July to 14 August 1932, centred on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. With the Depression keeping many teams at home, only 1,332 athletes took part. Even so, the first Olympic Village for male athletes was built, and the Games introduced medal ceremonies with the top three on a podium and their flags raised, along with photo-finish cameras and precise timing. The American Babe Didrikson won two gold medals in women’s athletics.
