Before dawn on 11 July 2008 a South Korean tourist in her fifties, walking near the beach of the Mount Geumgang tourist zone, strayed out of the zone into a military area and was shot dead by a North Korean sentry. The government suspended the tours the next day and demanded an investigation and guarantees against a recurrence, but North Korea refused an on-site inquiry.

The tours, which had run for about ten years since 1998, never resumed. North Korea confiscated or froze South Korean assets at Mount Geumgang in 2010, and in 2019 Kim Jong Un ordered the South Korean facilities there torn down.
