Battle of Hwangtohyeon
The peasant army routed the Jeolla provincial troops at Hwangtohyeon in Jeongeup, then beat the government army from Seoul at Hwangnyongchon in Jangseong.
Having gathered at Baeksan, the peasant army routed the Jeolla provincial troops and a peddlers’ militia at Hwangtohyeon in Jeongeup at dawn on the 7th day of the 4th lunar month — its first major victory over government forces. It then swept through the southwest of Jeolla, through Jeongeup, Gochang, Mujang, Yeonggwang and Hampyeong.
The government sent troops from Seoul under Hong Gye-hun. After beating them too at Hwangnyongchon in Jangseong on the 23rd, the peasant army marched straight north and entered Jeonju on the 27th.
