Uisang

Silla monk who brought Hwaeom (Huayan) Buddhism from Tang, founded Buseoksa, wrote the Hwaeom ilseung beopgyedo and spread devotion to Avalokitesvara

He went to Tang in 661, studied Hwaeom (Huayan) under Zhiyan and returned around 670. In his Diagram of the Dharma Realm of the One Vehicle he summed up Hwaeom thought as "one is all, all is one," which is read as supporting social integration and strong royal power after unification. In 676 he founded Buseoksa at Yeongju, and his disciples spread the Hwaeom school from Naksansa and the other "ten Hwaeom temples." He preached faith in Avalokitesvara (Gwaneum), who saves people from suffering in this life, and accepted disciples regardless of status. He is said to have dissuaded King Munmu from building a new wall at Gyeongju for the people’s sake.
