Former Provisional Government figure and Speaker of the National Assembly who died while campaigning as the Democratic Party presidential candidate in 1956

After the March First Movement he helped found the Provisional Government in Shanghai and served as its Minister of Home Affairs, among other posts. Returning after liberation, he became Vice Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly and succeeded to the speakership when Syngman Rhee was elected president in 1948. After the rounding-off amendment he helped found the Democratic Party in 1955. As its presidential candidate in 1956 he campaigned under the slogan "We can't live like this, let's change" and drew huge crowds to a rally on the Han River sands, but in May he died on a train taking him to campaign in the Honam region.
