Pachacuti

Also called: Pachacutec, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui

Ninth Inca ruler (r. c. 1438–1471) who rebuilt Cusco and turned the Inca state into an empire by conquest

Originally named Cusi Yupanqui, he was a son of the Inca ruler Viracocha. When the Chanka attacked Cusco, he is said to have stayed and beaten them after his father fled, and then became king. He rebuilt Cusco in the shape of a puma, embellished the sun temple of Coricancha and resettled people across conquered lands. With his son Topa Inca he conquered the peoples around Lake Titicaca and along the coast.
