Midhat Pasha

Ottoman reforming statesman and grand vizier who drafted the Ottoman constitution of 1876 (the Midhat constitution)

He made his name with provincial reforms as governor of the Danube Province (1864), building roads, schools and agricultural credit funds, and after serving as governor of Baghdad became grand vizier. In 1876 he and his allies deposed Sultan Abdülaziz, helped Abdulhamid II to the throne and drafted the constitution. But he was exiled the next year, tried in 1881 for the death of Abdülaziz, imprisoned at Taif in Arabia and murdered there in 1884.
