Jeong Seon (Gyeomjae)

Painter who pioneered “true-view” landscapes of Korea’s own scenery; his masterpieces include Inwang jesaekdo and Geumgang jeondo

Breaking with idealised landscapes in the Chinese manner, he travelled to the Diamond Mountains and around Hanyang to paint them from life. His Inwang jesaekdo of 1751 shows Inwangsan after rain in heavy ink, and Geumgang jeondo gathers the whole of the Diamond Mountains into a single circular composition. Painters who followed his style formed the Gyeomjae school.
