Ashikaga Yoshiaki

Fifteenth and last shogun of the Muromachi shogunate (r. 1568–1588), installed with Oda Nobunaga’s help but driven from Kyoto in 1573 after turning against him

Son of the twelfth shogun Yoshiharu, he became a monk at the Kōfuku-ji in Nara as a child. When his brother, the thirteenth shogun Yoshiteru, was murdered in 1565 he escaped and took refuge with the Asakura and others, and in 1568 entered Kyoto with Oda Nobunaga and became shogun. Expelled in 1573 after turning on Nobunaga, he went on calling himself shogun under Mōri protection and stirring up the anti-Nobunaga lords. In 1588 he took holy orders, gave up the office and received a 10,000-koku stipend from Hideyoshi, whom he accompanied to Nagoya in Hizen during the invasion of Korea. He died at Osaka in 1597.
