Yi Si-ae’s Rebellion

When Sejo sent central officials to curb local magnates in Hamgil Province, Yi Si-ae of Gilju rebelled; the revolt was crushed within three months and the local yuhyangso bodies were abolished.

Local magnates had long served as magistrates in Hamgil Province. Sejo’s dispatch of officials from the capital and his use of the hopae law to stop migration bred resentment. Yi Si-ae spread word that southern officials meant to kill the people of Hamgil, murdered the provincial commander and took the province north of Hamhung.

After the revolt was put down, the yuhyangso local councils that had joined it were abolished (they were restored under Seongjong). Generals such as Nam I and Prince Guseong rose to prominence through the campaign.
