The tournament was held in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, amid protests at the huge sums spent on preparations. Goal-line technology was used for the first time. South Korea drew 1–1 with Russia and lost 2–4 to Algeria and 0–1 to Belgium. In the semi-final at Belo Horizonte on 8 July Brazil were crushed 1–7 by Germany, Miroslav Klose setting the all-time World Cup scoring record with his sixteenth goal. In the final at the Maracanã on 13 July, Mario Götze’s goal in extra time beat Messi’s Argentina 1–0 and gave Germany its first title since reunification — the first European triumph in the Americas.
