V Narod Movement

The Dong-A Ilbo sent students to the countryside during vacations to teach Hangeul and campaign against superstition and for better living.

"V narod" is Russian for "to the people". The Dong-A Ilbo led it from 1931 to 1934, after the Chosun Ilbo’s literacy campaign begun in 1929 under the slogan "Knowledge is power; learn to live". Sim Hun’s novel Sangnoksu (Evergreen) depicts this rural enlightenment work.

It did much to reduce illiteracy, but Japan banned it in 1935.
