Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Also called: Games of the XXXII Olympiad, 2020 Summer Olympics

Postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic—the first postponement in Olympic history—the Games were held in 2021 under the name “Tokyo 2020”, mostly without spectators.

In March 2020, as COVID-19 spread around the world, the IOC and Japan agreed to postpone the Games by a year. Games had been cancelled by war before, but never postponed. They were held from 23 July to 8 August 2021, still called “Tokyo 2020”, and under a state of emergency most events took place without spectators. Russian athletes, sanctioned over doping, competed as the “Russian Olympic Committee (ROC)”. Skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing and karate made their debuts. South Korea’s archer An San won the mixed team, women’s team and women’s individual events, the first Korean to win three golds at a single Summer Games.
