Compilation of the Annals of Seven Reigns

After Gaegyeong burned in the second Khitan invasion and the records were lost, the annals of the seven kings from Taejo to Mokjong were compiled anew from Hyeonjong’s reign and completed under Deokjong.

When the Khitans burned Gaegyeong in 1011, the records kept in the palace were destroyed. Hyeonjong ordered new annals in 1013, and Hwang Ju-ryang and others, gathering scattered records, completed the annals of the seven reigns from Taejo to Mokjong under Deokjong (1034).

They began Goryeo’s practice of compiling annals for each reign. None of the Goryeo annals survive, but they were the foundation for the early Joseon compilations Goryeosa and Goryeosa jeolyo.
