2024 Paris Olympics

Also called: Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, Paris 2024

Paris hosted its third Olympics, a century after its second. For the first time the opening ceremony was held outside a stadium, with teams sailing along the Seine, and for the first time places were divided equally between men and women.

Exactly a hundred years after 1924, and following 1900, Paris hosted its third Summer Games, joining London as a three-time host. The opening ceremony on 26 July 2024 was the first held outside a stadium: the teams paraded by boat along the Seine before gathering at the Trocadéro. Some 10,700 athletes from more than 200 teams took part until 11 August, with athlete quotas split equally between men and women for the first time. Breaking made its debut, and the surfing was held at Tahiti in French Polynesia. Russian and Belarusian athletes, sanctioned over the invasion of Ukraine, could compete only as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN).

During the opening ceremony the announcer introduced the South Korean team by North Korea’s official name, for which the IOC apologised. South Korea won all five archery events, and Ahn Se-young took the women’s badminton singles gold; with thirteen golds Korea finished eighth.
