Held alongside the World’s Fair from 14 May to 28 October 1900, the Games had no opening ceremony and were so swallowed up by the exposition that it was unclear which contests were Olympic. Athletics took place on the grass of the Bois de Boulogne. Some twenty-odd nations and roughly a thousand athletes are thought to have taken part. Women competed for the first time, and Charlotte Cooper won the tennis to become the first female Olympic champion.
