Some 10,500 athletes from 204 nations took part from 27 July to 12 August 2012, London’s third Summer Games after 1908 and 1948. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei sent women for the first time, making these the first Games at which every team included women, and women’s boxing made its debut. For South Korea, Yang Hak-seon won the vault, the country’s first gymnastics gold, and the football team beat Japan for the bronze. Korea finished fifth with thirteen golds.
