Gyeongdeok Restores the Nogeup and Sinicizes Names

King Gyeongdeok abolished monthly salaries and restored the nogeup stipend villages; the same year he gave place names, and soon offices and titles, Chinese-style forms.

Gyeongdeok tried to reassert royal authority by sinicizing place names and official titles, and renamed the Gukhak the Taehakgam. Yet under aristocratic pressure the nogeup abolished by Sinmun returned in 757, a sign that the aristocracy was regaining strength.

The new titles reverted under King Hyegong. Gyeongdeok’s reign was also a cultural peak that saw Bulguksa and Seokguram begun and work start on the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok.
