First Battle of Yeonpyeong
Also called: First Yeonpyeong naval battle
When North Korean patrol boats that had crossed the Northern Limit Line opened fire, the South Korean navy fought back and sank a North Korean torpedo boat
From early June 1999 North Korean patrol boats, accompanied by crab-fishing vessels, repeatedly crossed the Northern Limit Line west of Yeonpyeong Island. The South Korean navy pushed them back by ramming, and on the morning of 15 June, when a North Korean patrol boat opened fire, it returned fire.
In about 14 minutes of fighting a North Korean torpedo boat was sunk and several patrol boats badly damaged. South Korean patrol boats were damaged and several sailors wounded, but none were killed. North Korea afterwards repeatedly asserted that it did not recognise the NLL.
