2·28 Daegu Student Protest

Also called: February 28 Democratic Movement

Ahead of the 15 March presidential and vice-presidential election, high school students in Daegu protested against being ordered to school on a Sunday.

On Sunday 28 February 1960 Chang Myon, the Democratic Party candidate for vice president, held a campaign rally in Daegu. To keep students away, the Liberal Party government ordered Daegu high schools to hold classes that Sunday, and students from Kyungpook High School and others took to the streets, protesting against students being used for politics.

It was the first of the student protests that led to the April Revolution, coming before the protests against the rigged 15 March election. In 2018, 28 February became a national memorial day.
