Retiring from office, Yi Hwang built the Dosan Seodang in his home of Yean, Andong, and taught students there. After his death in 1570 his disciples and local Confucians added a shrine and lecture hall behind it in 1574, opening Dosan Seowon. In 1575 King Seonjo granted a signboard written by Han Seok-bong, making it a chartered academy.
Dosan Seowon became the centre of the Yeongnam sarim and the Toegye school. It was one of the 47 academies spared when the Heungseon Daewongun closed the academies in 1871, and in 2019 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with Sosu, Oksan, Byeongsan and others as "Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies".
