Jeon Tae-il

Garment cutter at Pyeonghwa Market in Seoul who set himself on fire crying "Obey the Labour Standards Act"

To change the long hours and poor conditions of young workers, he formed the 'Babohoe' with fellow cutters and surveyed working conditions to demand improvements. On 13 November 1970, in front of Pyeonghwa Market, he set himself on fire, crying "We are not machines". After his death the Cheonggye Garment Workers' Union was formed and the labour movement grew rapidly.
